Newcastle down 10-man Chelsea to close in on Champions League

An early strike from Sandro Tonali and a late deflected effort by Bruno GuimarĂ£es secured Newcastle United a 2-0 home victory over Chelsea on Sunday, pushing the Magpies closer to next season’s Champions League. Chelsea’s hopes took a major blow when striker Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the first half for an elbow on Dan Burn following a VAR review.

The win lifts Newcastle to third in the table with 66 points, three clear of Chelsea in fifth—the final Champions League spot—with two matches remaining. Aston Villa sit level on points with Chelsea, while Nottingham Forest trail by two ahead of their clash with already-relegated Leicester City later in the day.

Tonali gave Newcastle a dream start by slotting home Jacob Murphy’s cross in just the second minute. Jackson’s red card in the 35th minute left Chelsea with 10 men, though they controlled much of the second half. However, after weathering Chelsea’s pressure, GuimarĂ£es sealed the result with a 90th-minute shot from distance that deflected past the keeper, clinching three vital points.
