Cam Ward shines for the Hurricanes, sending a message to the Gators and their fans.
In Gainesville, Fla., quarterback Cam Ward approached the Miami tunnel as Hurricanes fans clad in green and orange yelled for his attention. However, it was Coach Mario Cristobal who intercepted him, directing Ward towards a group of fans that had been cheering behind the bench all game. Ward waved and high-fived the supporters, sharing in the celebration of a significant victory.
The Hurricanes had every reason to relish the moment. This win carried extra weight—it was on the road, against an in-state rival, in a stadium where Miami hadn't tasted victory in 22 years. Ward was the standout player in Miami's commanding 41-17 victory over Florida on Saturday, proving that the hype surrounding the Hurricanes over the past nine months was justified. By the third quarter, chants of "Let's Go Canes" echoed through the Swamp.
After the game, Ward offered advice to Gator fans: "If you're going to be loud, be loud when we're huddling, not after we've broken the huddle. By then, it’s too late—we've already communicated the play. But it was a great atmosphere, and I'm thrilled we got the win."
Ward's performance silenced over 90,000 fans, displaying his escapability, intelligence, and pinpoint accuracy. He threw for 385 yards—setting a program record for a debut—along with three touchdowns and one interception. After the game, Ward, clearly annoyed by pregame chatter that questioned whether Miami could handle a loud environment, had a message for Gator fans.
"I played at USC," said Ward, who transferred to Miami from Washington State. "USC wasn’t packed, but it was louder than this. I played in Oregon—it was louder than this. The Pac-12 gets a bad rap. Some advice to the fans: If you're going to be loud, be loud when we're huddling. Can't just be loud after we break the huddle. But it was a good atmosphere, and I'm just excited we got the victory."
Ward's arrival in January after initially declaring for the NFL draft buoyed hopes for a breakthrough season under Cristobal in Year 3. Miami also secured key transfers like Damien Martinez, Tyler Baron, and Meesh Powell, but Ward garnered most of the attention with his standout spring performance. Now, he’s proving his worth in games that count.
"Yeah, he's not bad," Cristobal joked during the postgame press conference. "You probably wondered during camp, 'Is Cam Ward really that good?' He's just scratching the surface. Accurate, improvises well, extends plays—he was the spark plug today."
Ward's most spectacular play came in the third quarter. Forced out of the pocket, he scrambled left and found Jacolby George in the back of the end zone. Ward fired a pass, and George tiptoed inbounds for a 23-yard touchdown.
"He's one of the best in the scramble drill," Ward said. "With our receiving corps and tight ends, it’s tough for defenses to cover us. Routine plays win games, and that’s what we did."
Was that touchdown pass to George really routine? "I've made plays like that before," Ward said. "So, it's routine for me. Great catch by him."
Ward recorded 350 passing yards for the fifth time in his career while completing over 70% of his passes. According to ESPN Stats & Information, only two FBS quarterbacks have more such games since 2022: Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix.
Florida rarely pressured Ward—only nine times on 38 dropbacks. Miami's physical, dominant play up front made the difference. Cristobal, a former offensive lineman, emphasized that the Hurricanes are now playing "Miami football." Though Miami fans have been hopeful before, especially after big wins, Cristobal stressed the importance of building on this victory.
"We've been working hard," Cristobal said. "Getting a convincing win like that is great, but now we have to handle success and keep improving. Today was a big step."
Or as Powell put it, "This is just one game. We plan to go 16 more."
