San Francisco 49ers player Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery, according to police. A 17-year-old suspect is now in custody.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement from the team.
Pearsall is currently in serious but stable condition, the 49ers confirmed.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. PT when a 17-year-old male attempted to rob Pearsall at gunpoint as he was walking alone. An altercation ensued, leading to both Pearsall and the suspect sustaining injuries, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
"Gunfire from the suspect’s weapon struck both Mr. Pearsall and the suspect," San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said during a Saturday news conference, noting that multiple shots were fired.
The suspect, identified as a resident of Tracy, California, was apprehended by police after attempting to flee the scene, Scott added.
Charges against the suspect will be filed in juvenile court, according to San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. A decision on the charges is expected by Tuesday or Wednesday.
“Given the suspect’s age, charges will be filed in juvenile court as we continue to review the evidence to determine our next steps,” Jenkins said.
Both Pearsall and the suspect received medical treatment at a hospital after officers provided initial aid at the scene, according to the police report.
While police have not yet determined a specific motive for the shooting, there is no evidence to suggest Pearsall was targeted due to his status as a professional football player, Scott said.
The chief emphasized that the incident appears to have been an attempted robbery, and it is believed that the suspect acted alone. Only one firearm was involved, and it has been recovered by the police, Scott noted.
It remains unclear how many times Pearsall was shot or what the suspect intended to steal. Investigators are reviewing video footage as part of the ongoing investigation. Pearsall was stable enough to speak with police, but Scott mentioned that further confirmation is needed on certain details.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family," the team said in a statement Saturday night.
San Francisco Mayor London Breed described the attempted robbery as a "terrible and rare incident in Union Square" during the news conference.
"I look forward to seeing him recover and return to the field," she said.
Scott expressed his shock and sadness over the shooting, emphasizing that such violence has no place in the city.
"My heart goes out to Mr. Pearsall and his family, and I wish him a swift recovery," Scott said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "I’m grateful our diligent officers made a quick arrest, and we will do everything possible to ensure justice is served."
Police secured the area and continued their investigation at the scene of the shooting in Union Square on Saturday.
Pearsall, a rookie wide receiver, was drafted by the 49ers with the 31st overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The 23-year-old previously played three years at Arizona State and two years at Florida during his college career, finishing his final season with 965 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
Following the incident, Pearsall’s teammate Deebo Samuel posted on social media, “He’s good. Thank God!!!”
Pearsall had been recovering from a partial shoulder dislocation, an injury from his college days, according to the NFL. He returned to practice this past week after being sidelined for the 49ers’ three preseason games.
The 49ers are scheduled to play their season opener against the New York Jets on September 9.
“We’ve had extra officers in Union Square for some time, and we will continue to do so,” Scott said Saturday night. “When incidents like this happen, people can feel anxious, and we want to reassure the public that we’re there for them. We’ll be increasing our presence in the area.”
