Yankees avoid World Series sweep, push for Game 5 against Dodgers.

You can't stage a comeback from a 3-0 deficit without winning your first game, and the New York Yankees managed to do just that, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 in Game 4 of the World Series.

The game kicked off with Freddie Freeman hitting a two-run homer for the Dodgers. However, the Yankees quickly responded, narrowing the gap with a run driven in by Alex Verdugo on a fielder’s choice. In a pivotal moment, Anthony Volpe smashed a grand slam in the third inning, giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead—their first since Game 1.

Los Angeles added two runs in the fifth through small ball tactics, but the Yankees missed a prime scoring chance when they loaded the bases without converting in the same inning. Austin Wells redeemed the missed opportunity by launching a solo homer in the sixth.

In the seventh, the Dodgers had the tying run at the plate, but Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freeman were all retired. The Yankees then built on their lead in the eighth inning: Volpe scored on a fielder’s choice from Verdugo, followed by Gleyber Torres hitting a three-run homer—his first of October—extending the lead to 10-4. Even Aaron Judge got in on the action with an RBI single, marking his first run driven in of the World Series. Notably, the Yankees had managed only seven runs across the first three games combined.

Luis Gil pitched four solid innings, but it was the bullpen that shone, as five Yankee relievers combined for five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while racking up seven strikeouts.

The Yankees are aiming to become only the second team in MLB history to overcome a 3-0 series deficit, a feat previously achieved by the 2004 Boston Red Sox against the Yankees in the ALCS. Perhaps Volpe, a New Jersey native who attended the Yankees' 2009 World Series parade, could play a role similar to that of Dave Roberts, the current Dodgers manager who was instrumental in the Red Sox's comeback two decades ago.

Game 5 will take place back in the Bronx, with the Yankees carrying momentum into the matchup, as they plan to start reigning Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole against the Dodgers’ Jack Flaherty.

A victory in Game 5 would mark the first time a World Series has been pushed to Game 6 after a team took a 3-0 lead, which would take place on Friday night in Los Angeles. The pressure is certainly mounting.
