Reese Witherspoon announces that 'Big Little Lies' will return for Season 3 with its original author involved.

Reese Witherspoon is revealing more details about Season 3 of "Big Little Lies."

During a recent red carpet event for her media company, Hello Sunshine, Witherspoon shared that she and co-star Nicole Kidman have been eagerly awaiting new material from Liane Moriarty, the bestselling author behind the series. “We’re waiting for Liane Moriarty. She’s going to be turning in something very soon,” the 48-year-old actress told E! News. “We’re going back to the original author and revisiting the original characters.”

Witherspoon, who attended Hello Sunshine's second annual Shine Away conference on October 5, also mentioned that the kids in the series are likely older now, which could add a new dynamic. “I don’t know yet; I haven’t read it,” she added, expressing her excitement.

Both Witherspoon and Kidman have confirmed that a third season of the Emmy-winning HBO drama is in development. In November, Kidman, 57, noted during a Q&A that they are in constant communication about the project, saying, “There’s a timeline, and we’re doing it.” Both stars serve as producers for the show.

In a June conversation with Vanity Fair, Kidman remarked that Season 3 is progressing “fast and furious,” while humorously acknowledging her eagerness to discuss it. “We need to shut up,” she said, adding that discussing a project before it’s completed can give a false sense of accomplishment.

The first season, which premiered in 2017, revolved around a mysterious murder and the group of women entangled in the investigation. Witherspoon, Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoƫ Kravitz, and Laura Dern starred in the series, which was initially intended as a standalone story but returned for a second season in 2019, showcasing the aftermath of the murder. Meryl Streep joined the cast for Season 2.

In past interviews, both Dern and Woodley expressed their hopes for a third season. Dern told Entertainment Weekly in February, “We love each other so much and would have the time of our lives being back together, and we love our characters so much.”
