UADALAJARA, México (AP) — Raúl Jiménez scored from a free kick in the 22nd minute and assisted on César Huerta's goal in the 49th minute, leading Mexico to a 2-0 victory over the United States in a friendly match on Tuesday. This win ended Mexico's seven-game winless streak against the U.S., which included five losses and two draws since September 2019.

The match marked the second game in charge for Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino, who had previously guided the U.S. team to a 2-0 win over Panama in his debut. The U.S. struggled without key players like Christian Pulisic, failing to register a single shot in the first half—something not seen since a friendly against Mexico in April 2023.

Jiménez opened the scoring with an impressive strike from outside the area, marking his 34th international goal. He then created the setup for Huerta’s goal by chasing down a through ball. Although Tim Ream attempted to clear it, Mexico regained possession and sent the ball to Huerta, who skillfully evaded Miles Robinson and scored from close range, netting his third international goal.

Pochettino acknowledged Mexico's superiority in the match, stating, "Overall, Mexico was a bit better and deserved the victory. For us, this is a process. It was a great opportunity for our players to play in a challenging environment. We can only improve and learn from this experience."

On the Mexican side, coach Javier Aguirre celebrated his second win since taking over from Jaime Lozano. This victory came as a relief after a disappointing 2-2 draw against a reserve Valencia team in Puebla on Saturday. Aguirre noted, "The team was very aware of the poor result in Puebla and was eager to prove that it could perform better. It wasn't our best game, but we're leaving content."

Despite the win, some fans at Estadio Akron chanted a homophobic term that has previously led to FIFA fines, although Costa Rican referee Keylor Herrera did not halt the match.
