Lionel Messi matches Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick record with a standout performance for Argentina.
Lionel Messi showcased a spectacular return to form for Argentina on Tuesday, netting three goals in a commanding 6-0 victory over Bolivia during a 2026 World Cup qualifier. This impressive performance marked the 37-year-old's 10th international hat-trick, tying him with Cristiano Ronaldo for the most in men’s soccer history.
“It’s truly wonderful to be here and feel the love from the fans; it moves me when they shout my name,” Messi remarked after his unforgettable display at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. “This motivates me. I find joy in being happy where I am. Despite my age, when I’m on the field, I feel like a kid because I'm at ease with this team. As long as I feel good and can perform the way I want, I’ll keep relishing it.”
In addition to his three goals, the Inter Miami star provided two assists, helping the reigning world champions secure a comfortable win. Messi opened the scoring in the 19th minute, seizing on a defensive mistake to put Argentina ahead. He then contributed to the second goal by selflessly assisting Lautaro Martínez, who tapped the ball into an open net in the 43rd minute.
Before halftime, Messi created another moment of brilliance with a perfectly timed pass from a quick free kick to Julián Álvarez, allowing him to control the ball and deftly lift it over the advancing goalkeeper.
The second half continued with more fireworks, as Thiago Almada extended the lead to 4-0 in the 69th minute after a well-executed team play. Messi then thrilled the home crowd with two rapid goals before the final whistle. The first was a classic Messi effort, where he weaved through the Bolivian defense before unleashing a low shot beneath the goalkeeper—evocative of his unstoppable days with Barcelona.
Not to be outdone, he soon picked up the ball at the edge of the box and curled a left-footed shot into the bottom corner, bringing the score to 6-0. A beaming Messi enjoyed the adulation of the fans chanting his name throughout the stadium.
This match was only Messi's second appearance for Argentina since July, following his recovery from an ankle injury. Although the Albiceleste had previously drawn with Venezuela and lost to Colombia in September, they remain at the top of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying standings with 22 points. Argentina's next qualifier will be against Paraguay on November 14.
