Dolphins Acquire Cam Smith

The Miami Dolphins' top pick from the 2023 NFL Draft may soon have the opportunity to make an impact this season.

On Monday, the day after their 16-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, the Dolphins announced two roster moves, one of which was activating cornerback Cam Smith to the 53-man roster. Smith, a second-round pick from South Carolina, had been on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury since August 27.

With Smith's activation, the Dolphins now have seven cornerbacks on their roster, an unusually high number. The cornerback lineup includes Jalen Ramsey, Kendall Fuller, Kader Kohou, Storm Duck, Siran Neal, and Ethan Bonner.

To accommodate Smith, the Dolphins placed wide receiver/returner Braxton Berrios on injured reserve. Berrios suffered a knee injury during the fourth quarter against Indianapolis, raising initial concerns about a possible torn ACL after his knee buckled during a kickoff return.

As a result of Berrios being placed on IR, the Dolphins now have just four wide receivers on the active roster: Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Odell Beckham Jr., and rookie sixth-round pick Malik Washington. The team also has two wide receivers on the practice squad—Dee Eskridge and Erik Ezukanma—who could be promoted to the active roster later this week. Eskridge has one elevation left for the regular season, while Ezukanma has two, making either a candidate for elevation ahead of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith was one of two Dolphins players designated to return from IR on August 27, alongside wide receiver River Cracraft. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is set to join them as he returns to practice on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a concussion. This will leave the Dolphins with five return designations remaining for the regular season.

Currently, Cracraft and rookie safety Patrick McMorris are the only players eligible to return from IR. Guard Isaiah Wynn, edge defender Bradley Chubb, and outside linebacker Cameron Goode are on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list and will not count against the eight-return limit if they start practicing.
