Anne Hathaway returns to Genovia with the announcement of The Princess Diaries 3, which will be directed by Adele Lim from Crazy Rich Asians.


 

Anne Hathaway is officially returning to the beloved Princess Diaries franchise, as the highly anticipated third installment has been greenlit. The announcement came on Friday, much to the excitement of fans who have long awaited this sequel. Hathaway will reprise her iconic role as Princess Mia Thermopolis, based on the young adult novels by Meg Cabot.

According to Variety, the film will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who was involved in the original films, and Hathaway will also take on a producer role through her company, Somewhere Pictures. Late Friday, she shared the news with a fun selfie video on Instagram, featuring clips from the first two movies as she recited the famous "Shut up!" line, sparking nostalgia among fans. The project has been in development for two years, and Hathaway previously teased an update in an interview with V Magazine, stating, “We’re in a good place. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place." It seems production has finally made significant progress.

The Princess Diaries follows Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who learns that her estranged father is the King of the fictional kingdom of Genovia. With the help of her grandmother, played by Julie Andrews, Mia embarks on her journey to embrace her royal destiny.

The third installment will be directed by Adele Lim, known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians. In a statement, Lim expressed her enthusiasm: “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

While filming is set to begin this year, a release date has yet to be announced.
