On their opening offensive drive, the Buccaneers advanced to the Lions’ 49-yard line thanks to a crossing route by Godwin. A defensive pass interference call on Trey Palmer set Tampa Bay up at first-and-goal from the five. However, Mayfield was sacked by Aidan Hutchinson, forcing Chase McLaughlin to kick a 30-yard field goal for an early 3-0 lead.
The Buccaneers' defense quickly made a mark, as second-year corner Zyon McCollum intercepted Jared Goff’s first pass, giving Mayfield excellent field position at the Detroit 44. Although Mayfield was again sacked by Hutchinson, Godwin managed to gain 19 yards on third-and-22, leading to another McLaughlin field goal from 55 yards, extending the lead to 6-0.
The Lions responded with a big play from Jameson Williams, who caught a 50-yard pass. A roughing the passer penalty on Tampa Bay set up a first-and-goal, but after an incompletion to Williams, Jake Bates converted a 22-yard field goal, bringing the score to 6-3. The Bucs struggled on their next possession, as Hutchinson recorded another sack on Mayfield, leading to a punt.
Detroit continued their momentum, as Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown for six yards, and the Lions capped a drive with a 35-yard field goal from Bates, leveling the score at 6-6. Godwin then took center stage for the Buccaneers, with two critical receptions for a total of 28 yards. He finished the drive with a spectacular 41-yard touchdown catch, putting Tampa Bay ahead 13-6. Godwin’s route showcased his savvy as he faked an inside break before sprinting down the sideline.
As the second quarter neared its end, Tampa Bay's defense tightened, with Jordan Whitehead breaking up a pass and Christian Izien intercepting a pass from Mayfield. However, the Lions failed to capitalize, ending the half with a 10-second runoff due to having too many players on the field.
After halftime, St. Brown gained 20 yards on a quick pass, and a roughing the passer penalty added 15 more for the Lions. David Montgomery capped off a 12-play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run, giving Detroit a 16-13 lead. On Tampa Bay's ensuing drive, Mayfield displayed his agility, scrambling for 11 yards on third down and scoring an 11-yard rushing touchdown, reclaiming the lead for the Bucs at 20-16.
The Lions' next possession ended in a punt after Goff’s pass to Kalif Raymond fell incomplete. Tampa Bay’s following drive stalled when Hutchinson recorded his fifth sack of Mayfield. The Lions then advanced downfield but were thwarted by Izien’s interception at the Tampa Bay nine-yard line.
As the game neared its end, the Lions had another chance, moving the ball effectively but ultimately falling short. Key defensive stops by Whitehead and Izien ensured that Tampa Bay held on to their lead, sealing the victory and staving off the Lions’ comeback efforts.
