WATCH: Amanda Gorman Ignites Passion with Poetry on Night 3 of the DNC

The NPR Network will provide live coverage from Chicago all week, delivering the latest updates on the Democratic National Convention.

Among the highlights are musical and comedic performances from notable artists like Stevie Wonder and Kenan Thompson. Amanda Gorman also took the stage, presenting a stirring poem in honor of Vice President Kamala Harris. Reflecting the evening's theme of freedom, Gorman emphasized the "audacity of hope" and the importance of voting in this election.

“We are one family, regardless of religion, class, or color. A true patriot is defined not just by a love for liberty, but by our love for one another. This sentiment resonates throughout our country because, while we all cherish freedom, it is love that ultimately liberates us,” she said with a smile. Dressed in a striking periwinkle cape, Gorman was frequently interrupted by applause as she delivered her message.

“Let us not only believe in the American dream, but strive to be worthy of it,” she urged.

In 2017, Gorman became the first National Youth Poet Laureate while studying at Harvard University. She made history in 2021 by reciting her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Joe Biden's inauguration at just 22 years old. Since then, she has published three poetry books for young readers, performed at Carnegie Hall with live music, and addressed the United Nations on issues like global hunger and poverty.

Her performance at the 2024 DNC marks her debut on this convention stage.
