Celebrity fitness guru's death ruled an accident.
LOS ANGELES – Richard Simmons' brother has confirmed that the fitness guru's death in July has been ruled accidental.
In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, family spokesperson Tom Estey shared that Lenny Simmons received a call from the LA Coroner’s Office informing him that Richard's death was attributed to complications from recent falls, with heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report showed no illicit substances, only prescribed medications. The family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and love during this difficult time.
Richard Simmons, an iconic figure from the '80s, was found on July 13 by his longtime housekeeper, just one day after celebrating his 76th birthday. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed there was no foul play, but the cause of death was initially deferred pending further testing.
Reports indicate that Simmons fell at home on July 12 after experiencing dizziness, and his housekeeper mentioned that he intended to see a doctor the following day if his condition did not improve.
“I don’t want people to be sad about my brother,” Lenny stated at the time of Simmons’ passing. “I want them to remember him for the genuine joy and love he brought to people’s lives. He truly cared about people, reaching out to thousands throughout his career to offer help. So don’t be sad. Celebrate his life.”
