"Rapids Poised for Leagues Cup Quarterfinal: 'We Can Endure and Still Triumph'"

The Rapids have faced tough Liga MX opponents in their Leagues Cup run, overcoming teams like Club León, FC Juárez, and Deportivo Toluca. Now, their next challenge is even steeper: the reigning Liga MX champions, Club América. Winning against América on Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., will demand even more from the Rapids.

Despite their recent successes, the Rapids know that América presents a significant challenge. The Rapids coach, Chris Armas, emphasized their approach: “We prepare physically and emotionally to give everything against the opponent. We always step onto the field knowing we need to be at our best. This game is no different. We’re excited for the challenge and ready to face it head-on.”

Both teams have recently won games with late-game heroics. América, trailing 2-1 to St. Louis City, equalized in the 79th minute, took the lead with a penalty in the 86th minute, and added a final goal in the 90+8th minute. The Rapids also secured a dramatic win, scoring a decisive goal in added time to advance to the quarterfinals, despite Toluca's significant shot advantage.

América's performance against St. Louis, including 10 shots on target and four goals, highlights their finishing prowess, a step up from Toluca's struggle against the Rapids. For midfielder Cole Bassett, the focus isn’t solely on statistics. He and Armas both agree that the numbers aren't as crucial in knockout games. With limited rest and preparation, the emphasis is on recovery and mental strength.

Bassett noted, “We don’t want to focus entirely on América. We have quality ourselves. It's encouraging to know we can endure tough situations and still succeed. The key is taking our chances. If we can finish our opportunities, we'll be in a good position.”

The tournament, held in the U.S. and Canada, allows the highest-seeded Liga MX teams to choose home venues. As the No. 1 seed, América selected California for their hub and will host the No. 46 Rapids at LA Galaxy’s stadium. América’s previous home game against St. Louis was marked by a strong fan presence, and Saturday’s match is expected to be no different.

Bassett is eager for the challenge: “Facing the best in Mexico, especially in an environment where it feels like a home game for them, is what makes these knockout games exciting. We’re going in with a chance to win and hopefully move on to the semifinals.”
