Key Highlights from the Third Night of the Democratic National Convention
Democrats are counting on a strong desire within the American electorate to move past the divisiveness of the past decade, largely influenced by former President Donald Trump.
At the party’s convention on Wednesday night in Chicago, a strategy centered around “joy” was prominently featured, showcasing Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate capable of guiding the nation forward.
Former President Bill Clinton praised Harris for bringing “sheer joy” to the 2024 race, while Oprah Winfrey encouraged Americans to “choose joy.”
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg contrasted the “darkness” associated with Trump’s politics to the more uplifting approach offered by Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, which he described as “just feels better to be part of.”
The message highlighted the rapid evolution of the 2024 presidential race since President Joe Biden's exit last month. Biden’s campaign focused on grave warnings about the threat Trump posed to democracy. While Harris continues to echo those concerns, she has reframed them within a more optimistic narrative centered on themes of freedom and joy—paired with a celebratory party atmosphere.
Musical performances included John Legend and Sheila E. playing Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” and Stevie Wonder delivering “Higher Ground.” As alumni from the Mankato West High School football team—where Walz served as an assistant coach during a state championship season—took the stage in oversized jerseys, a pep band played the school’s fight song.
“Thank you for bringing the joy to this fight,” Walz told the audience.
