Dorm Room Tragedy: Murder-Suicide Shocks Campus on First Day of Classes

A leading Texas university has begun the new academic year not with the usual excitement of students attending classes, but with the tragic news of a dorm-room shooting.

Rice University issued a shelter-in-place order on Monday afternoon as campus police responded to a welfare check at the Jones College residence hall for junior Andrea Rodriguez Avila, who had been unreachable and missed classes.

Avila was found dead from a gunshot wound, alongside an unidentified man who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot. This man, reportedly from Florida, was not affiliated with the university.

Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected murder-suicide after discovering a note from the man that described a "troubled relationship" with Avila, who was said to be his girlfriend.

The shooting occurred on the first day of classes. Although the shelter-in-place order was lifted shortly afterward, all evening classes were canceled. University president Reginald DesRoches expressed his sorrow in a statement, noting that the incident occurred on what should have been a day of hope and new beginnings. He emphasized the profound impact this loss will have on the university community in the coming days and weeks. The university has been in contact with Avila’s parents, who are traveling from Maryland.

Initial reports indicate no signs of forced entry into Avila’s room, suggesting she may have let the man into Jones College earlier that day, as access to the dorms requires a university card swipe.
