Utah selects the Mammoth as its new mascot, concluding a yearlong search.
Farewell, Utah Hockey Club. Tusks up, Utah Mammoth.
After a 13-month journey marked by trademark hurdles and over 850,000 fan votes across multiple rounds, the NHL’s Utah franchise officially unveiled its new name and permanent identity on Wednesday: the Utah Mammoth.
The Mammoth replaces the Utah Hockey Club placeholder name used during the 2024-25 inaugural season, following Smith Entertainment Group’s purchase and relocation of the Arizona Coyotes to Salt Lake City.
“When it came to naming the team, we did something unprecedented — four rounds of community voting, gathering feedback not just on names but also logos,” owners Ryan and Ashley Smith said. “The community chose Utah Mammoth, a symbol of who we are, where we came from, and the unstoppable force we’re building together.”
The team launched first-run Mammoth merchandise — T-shirts, hats, and hoodies — at its Delta Center store on Wednesday, and a news conference featuring NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was scheduled at the arena.
Mammoth jerseys will debut later this offseason and will be worn by Utah’s selections at the NHL Draft in June, where the franchise holds the fourth overall pick following Monday’s lottery.
A Mammoth-themed mascot is also in the works and will be introduced at home games next season.
The name, which accidentally leaked on the team’s YouTube channel last week, draws inspiration from the herds of mammoths that roamed Utah more than 10,000 years ago. Fossils have been discovered throughout the state, including a full skeleton unearthed in Huntington Canyon in 1988. “Evidence suggests mammoths charged in herds at speeds over 25 mph — similar to the NHL’s fastest skaters,” the team noted.
The franchise opted for the singular “Mammoth” to represent one unified team and all of Utah. The new logo — a mammoth head with a curved tusk — is packed with local symbolism: the snow-capped Wasatch Mountains form the top of the head, Utah’s silhouette and a hidden “M” appear on the left, and the tusk forms a “U” for Utah. "Tusks Up" will be the rallying cry for fans.
Utah’s home jerseys will feature the Mammoth logo, while away jerseys will display a “Utah” wordmark — joining the Carolina Hurricanes as one of two NHL teams using different designs on home and road sweaters. Shoulder patches will depict either the state outline with a hockey stick (home) or the Mammoth logo (away).
The rebranding process began in May 2024, when SEG launched a Qualtrics poll with 20 potential names. After narrowing to six finalists — Blizzard, Utah HC, Mammoth, Outlaws, Venom, and Yeti — fans voted again. Although "Yeti" was a popular early favorite, a trademark rejection by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (citing potential confusion with Yeti Coolers LLC) forced the team to drop it.
By January, the final vote was between Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth, and Utah Wasatch — though Wasatch was later swapped out for Outlaws during voting. The team reported Mammoth as the “clear favorite” in the final round.
Trademark concerns were cleared for all final names, and Utah’s ownership confirmed regular communication — and support — from the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League.
While Utah Hockey Club is stepping aside, the team says the name and branding will remain an honored part of its history.
