‘The Wheel of Time’ Ends Its Run at Prime Video Following Season 3
The Wheel of Time Cancellation Confirmed by Prime Video
Prime Video has officially announced it will not renew The Wheel of Time for a fourth season. The decision came more than a month after the Season 3 finale premiered on April 17, following extensive discussions. While the series remains creatively favored by the platform’s executives, the cancellation was ultimately driven by financial considerations in the current economic climate.
About The Series
Based on the book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time is a high-budget fantasy drama co-produced by Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios. It was a flagship fantasy title for Prime Video, paving the way for other genre series such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Starring Rosamund Pike, the show debuted strongly in 2021, marking Prime Video’s most-watched series premiere of that year and ranking among the platform’s top five launches ever.
Viewership and Performance
Over three seasons, The Wheel of Time has maintained a solid audience, though viewership declined during Season 3. Unlike the first two seasons, which stayed in Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals for their entire runs, Season 3 dropped out after three weeks—except for a brief return to #10 following the finale.
While Nielsen data reflects U.S. viewership, streaming renewal decisions consider global performance. The show ranked #1 on Prime Video in multiple countries during Season 3. However, despite its international popularity, the overall performance did not justify the high production costs, leading Prime Video and Sony TV to decide against continuing the series after exploring various options.
Fan Reaction and Creative Praise
The Season 3 finale was crafted to provide some closure given the cancellation risk and the passionate fanbase. Many fans and critics hailed Season 3 as the series’ strongest creatively, a view shared by Prime Video executives. Rotten Tomatoes scores improved steadily across seasons: 81% (Season 1), 86% (Season 2), and 97% (Season 3).
Prime Video and Sony TV will continue to support the Emmy campaign for Season 3.
Cast and Production Team
The series stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred alongside Daniel Henney, Josha Stradowski, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden, and others. The showrunner and executive producer is Rafe Judkins, with additional executive producers including Rick Selvage, Larry Mondragon, Ted Field, Mike Weber, Marigo Kehoe, Ciaran Donnelly, Justine Juel Gillmer, Dave Hill, and Rosamund Pike.
