Grizzlies' Jaylen Wells is awake and alert but has sustained a broken wrist.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Memphis Grizzlies starting guard Jaylen Wells suffered a right wrist fracture after a heavy fall following a midair collision at the end of a fast-break dunk during a 124-100 win over Charlotte on Tuesday, likely ending the rookie’s season just before the Grizzlies enter the playoffs.

Wells lay on the court for eight minutes before being immobilized and transported to the hospital on a stretcher. He was alert and moving all extremities, as confirmed by interim coach Tuomas Iisalo.

"It puts everything into perspective seeing that situation and seeing Jaylen there," Iisalo said. "He's an incredibly tough kid and had a great season."

Wells' father, Fred Wells, informed the Memphis Commercial Appeal that his son was alert enough to ask about the score of the game. The rookie reported pain in his face, jaw, and back, according to his father.

The injury occurred when Wells caught an outlet pass from Ja Morant and went up for a dunk. Charlotte's KJ Simpson, attempting to catch up to the play, inadvertently undercut him, causing Wells to lose balance mid-air and land awkwardly on his side with his head striking the court near the baseline.

"It's tough. I threw the pass and turned around for our little touchdown celebration. When I got there, the first thing I saw was blood, and I've got a weak stomach," Morant said. "We’ve just got to stay with him and keep praying for him. It's next man up. Obviously, that hurts. Guys will just have to be ready."

The game was delayed for 23 minutes, including warm-up time for both teams. After reviewing the play, officials assessed a flagrant foul 2 on Simpson for unnecessary contact, resulting in an automatic ejection. Simpson, visibly distraught, immediately bent down to check on Wells as the arena fell silent.

Wells, a 2024 second-round draft pick out of Washington State, had played in every game for Memphis, starting 74 of 79 games. The 6-foot-7 rookie was averaging 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists entering the game. With the win, the Grizzlies climbed into a tie for fourth place in the crowded Western Conference standings, though they could still drop as low as eighth.
