Celtics' Jayson Tatum: Wrist X-ray Clear After Hard Fall

BOSTON — Celtics All-Star Jayson Tatum said his right wrist is “all right” after a hard fall in Boston’s 103-86 Game 1 win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday at TD Garden. Postgame X-rays came back clean.

Tatum, who tallied 17 points on 8-of-22 shooting in just under 40 minutes, appeared to hurt the wrist with 8:28 left in the fourth quarter during a dunk attempt. He was met at the rim by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Wendell Carter Jr., who collided with Tatum midair, sending him crashing to the court and landing awkwardly on his right arm.

Tatum clutched his wrist and stayed on the floor in visible pain. After video review, Caldwell-Pope’s personal foul was upgraded to a flagrant 1. Tatum remained in the game but missed both free throws and continued to flex and favor the wrist as the Celtics closed out the win.

“Just landed on it,” Tatum said afterward. “It was throbbing for a second — kind of went away.”

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla wasn’t worried, saying simply that Tatum was “doing good” and gave no indication that his status for Game 2 is in doubt.

While Tatum struggled from the field — including 1-of-8 from three — he contributed a game-high 14 rebounds. Boston’s supporting cast stepped up in a big way. Derrick White led the way with 30 points and seven made threes. Sixth Man of the Year front-runner Payton Pritchard chipped in 19 off the bench.

Jaylen Brown, back in action after missing the final three regular-season games with a bone bruise in his right knee, added 16 points in 30 minutes. He looked more assertive in the second half, punctuated by a two-handed dunk late in the third quarter.

“I felt good today,” Brown said. “Took me a little while to get into the game, but I found a rhythm after halftime.”

Orlando’s Paolo Banchero poured in a game-high 36 points in the loss, but the Celtics used a dominant second half to pull away, outscoring the Magic by 20 after trailing by one at halftime.

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Boston as the Celtics look to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round series.
