Brian Kelly, head coach of LSU, has taken responsibility for the team's blowout defeat to Alabama.

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU head coach Brian Kelly took full responsibility for the Tigers’ 42-13 loss to Alabama on Saturday night, a defeat that likely dashed any hopes of a College Football Playoff berth. With the team now at 6-3 overall and 3-2 in SEC play, Kelly acknowledged that the road to a conference title is steep.

When asked how LSU would approach the remaining three weeks of the regular season with the playoff hopes now slim, Kelly said, "We're disappointed in the way we performed. These guys aren't throwing in the towel and saying, 'We're out of the playoffs.' They're disappointed, and I'm disappointed that we didn't meet the standard of LSU football. That's what stings more than anything—failing to live up to the LSU standard."

Kelly emphasized that wearing an LSU jersey carries with it a certain expectation of excellence, a standard that his team fell short of in the game against Alabama.

Despite having a bye week to prepare, LSU struggled to contain Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, who once again torched the Tigers’ defense. Milroe ran for 185 yards and four touchdowns, out-rushing his passing total of 109 yards. He had also rushed for 155 yards in Alabama’s 42-28 win over LSU last season. The Tigers have been unable to stop dual-threat quarterbacks this year, including in a loss to Texas A&M when backup QB Marcel Reed rushed for 62 yards and three touchdowns.

Kelly was frank in his assessment of the defensive performance, saying, "If you're watching the game, you're asking, 'What did they do for two weeks?' We have a scheme to stop the quarterback, and we didn't execute it. I take responsibility for that. But we also need to put our players in the right positions to capitalize on what they're capable of. We're all accountable, and we've got to fix it, because it's been an issue for a couple of weeks now."

When asked about specific adjustments defensively, Kelly noted, "We're not reinventing the wheel here. There are only a few ways to defend a quarterback like Milroe. We have to work with what we've got. There’s no quick fix. We need to find what works best for our players, and right now it hasn’t been working."

LSU linebacker Greg Penn III agreed that the game plan to stop Milroe was solid, but execution faltered. "We knew he was fast, but it’s hard to simulate that in practice. He’s a great player, and while our plan was good, they just executed better."

Offensively, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier struggled, especially in critical moments. Late in the second quarter, down 14-6, LSU’s defense made a key stop on fourth-and-short, but on the following play, Nussmeier was sacked and fumbled, setting up a quick Alabama touchdown to push the lead to 21-6.

In the third quarter, LSU drove to the Alabama 4-yard line but Nussmeier threw an interception in the end zone. Alabama responded with another touchdown to effectively seal the game. Nussmeier finished the game with three turnovers and now has six in his past two outings.

Turnovers were not LSU’s only issue—penalties also played a role. A controversial face mask call on what appeared to be a crucial sack of Milroe in the third quarter led to more Alabama points. Fans voiced their frustration by throwing debris on the field, an act Kelly did not condone but understood. "If I were in the stands, I wouldn't be happy either. But I wouldn't advocate throwing things on the field. I wasn't pleased with the way we played or coached, either."

For Alabama (7-2, 4-2), the win kept them in the playoff hunt. Coach Kalen DeBoer called it "probably the most complete game we've played," praising Milroe's ability to dominate with his legs. "Not only does he get first downs, but he finishes in the end zone," DeBoer said.

LSU players, despite the tough loss, are determined to regroup and refocus before facing Florida next week. Kelly echoed that sentiment, saying, "The bottom line is we didn't play to LSU’s standard. That's on me. I’ll make sure we’re better prepared moving forward."
