LeBron and Bronny Make History by Playing Together for the Lakers

LOS ANGELES — Two seasons ago, when LeBron James made history by surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all-time leading scorer, his eldest son, Bronny, was cheering from the sidelines.

On Tuesday night, during the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the father-son duo made history again by taking the court together. They became the first father-son pair in NBA history to play in a game simultaneously when they checked in with four minutes left in the second quarter. LeBron had already logged 13 minutes before reentering alongside Bronny for this landmark moment.

As they rose from the bench and approached the scorer's table, the Crypto.com Arena crowd erupted with excitement, cheering as LeBron and Bronny removed their warmups to officially step onto the court.

"That moment, us being at the scorer's table together and checking in, is something I will never forget," LeBron said during a joint postgame press conference with Bronny. "No matter how old I get or how my memory fades, I will always remember that."

For Bronny, the occasion was especially significant as it marked his first regular-season game. "I tried to focus on the game and not get caught up in everything happening around me," he said. "But I definitely felt the energy, and I appreciate Laker Nation for the support."

During their first stretch on the court, the Lakers were outscored 7-2, with Bronny missing an open three-pointer and getting blocked by Rudy Gobert after grabbing an offensive rebound. The crowd held its breath as Bronny attempted the three-pointer after receiving a pass from his father.

"We wanted that three to go in," said Anthony Davis, who led the Lakers with 36 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks. "Seeing them check in together gave me chills."

LeBron emphasized that their focus was on the game rather than the spectacle of their historic moment. "We had a job to do when we checked in," he said. "We weren't trying to make it a circus; we wanted to contribute to the team's success."

Bronny exited the game with 1:19 remaining in the half, finishing with one rebound and two missed shots. LeBron had 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Selected by the Lakers as the No. 55 pick in the second round of the NBA draft, Bronny had struggled in preseason but had a solid performance with 17 points in a recent exhibition game against the Golden State Warriors.

First-year Lakers coach JJ Redick praised Bronny and planned the moment carefully, discussing it with both players to ensure it flowed naturally during the game.

The Lakers began the second quarter on a 29-12 run, entering the court with momentum. "We wanted to maintain focus and not make it about us," LeBron said. "We aimed to keep our heads in the game."

Seated on the same baseline where Bronny had witnessed his father's record-breaking moment was another historic father-son duo: Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr., the first father-son pair to play together in Major League Baseball. LeBron expressed his excitement about sharing the night with them.

"This historic occasion was made even more special knowing the Griffeys were in attendance," he said.

LeBron and Bronny’s moment marked just the fourth time in professional sports history that a father and son have played together at the same time. The Griffeys played for the Seattle Mariners for two seasons in the early '90s, famously hitting back-to-back home runs.

After the game, the significance of their victory was not lost on the Jameses. "This was the first time we had a moment like this, and we actually won," Davis noted, emphasizing how much it added to the experience.
