Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson mocks Commanders fans during the final Hail Mary play.
Chicago's Hail Mary loss to Washington on Sunday was a tough moment for Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.
A video of the second-year player went viral showing him taunting D.C. fans while his back was turned as Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels prepared to snap the ball. Stevenson then dashed toward the crowd in the end zone, leaping to tip the ball to Noah Brown, who clinched Washington's 18-15 victory.
Stevenson chose not to speak to reporters after the game but later issued an apology on social media.
“To Chicago and my teammates, I apologize for my lack of awareness and focus,” he wrote. “The game isn’t over until the clock hits zero. You can’t take anything for granted. I’ve taken notes, and I will improve.”
In the game, Stevenson allowed four catches for 90 yards on nine targets, according to Next Gen Stats. The Bears defense struggled, giving up 326 passing yards and a touchdown to Daniels, who had been nursing a rib injury throughout the week. Despite keeping Washington from scoring until the final play, the Bears couldn’t hold onto their lead.
Down 12-0 late in the third quarter, Chicago fought back to take the lead with just 25 seconds left before Daniels' dramatic finish.
“That’s a tough loss to swallow,” Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said. “I was excited to see how they battled back and had a chance to win. That’s important to recognize, too.”
With the defeat, Chicago fell to 4-3, placing them last in the competitive NFC North.
