TVA: Nolichucky Dam is on the verge of failure, posing a risk of life-threatening flooding.
GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for areas downstream of the Nolichucky Dam as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown report an imminent dam failure.
At 12:13 a.m. on Saturday, the TVA announced a Condition Red Warning for the Nolichucky Dam in Greene County.
“The breach could happen at any moment due to extreme rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Helene, which is causing record river levels in the region,” the TVA stated on social media.
Residents downstream of the dam are urged to seek higher ground immediately. The TVA warned of “potential life-threatening flooding” that could reach areas as far as the Douglas Reservoir.
The NWS Morristown confirmed that the dam failure would impact north central Cocke County, southwestern Greene County, and southeastern Hamblen County. Flash flood warnings are in effect until 3:45 a.m., according to the NWS.
Dam operators reported signs of failure at 11:35 p.m. on Friday. The NWS noted that if a complete failure occurs, an initial flood wave would reach West Allens Bridge Road in approximately 20 minutes and the Highway 321 bridge in 30 minutes.
Residents in low-lying areas near the Nolichucky River are strongly advised to find higher ground and be cautious when traveling. The TVA had previously issued a Condition Yellow for the dam.
