Sinner overcomes Medvedev to advance to the US Open semifinals.
annik Sinner overcame a series of unpredictable momentum shifts on Wednesday at the US Open, defeating 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 to advance to his third major semi-final of the season.
The Australian Open champion, who leads the tour with 21 match wins at Grand Slam events this year, has now reached the semi-finals at all four majors. At just 23 years old, he is the first man born in the 1990s or 2000s to achieve this milestone and the first Italian man in the Open Era to do so.
Sinner showcased an impressive variety of tactics during the two-hour, 39-minute match, blending strategy and power as he engaged in a tactical battle with Medvedev. The 15-time tour-level titlist countered Medvedev's deep returns with serve-and-volley plays, drop shots, and powerful shots directed to every corner of the court. As rallies extended, Sinner intensified his hitting.
“It was very tough; we know each other quite well," Sinner noted, acknowledging his 38 unforced errors compared to Medvedev's 57. "We played in Australia this year and then in London. We knew it was going to be very physical. The first two sets were strange because whoever made the first break seemed to gain momentum.”
Active Players to Reach Semi-Finals at All Four Majors:
| Player | Year |
|---|---|
| Novak Djokovic | 2008 Australian Open |
| Rafael Nadal | 2008 US Open |
| Marin Cilic | 2022 Roland Garros |
| Jannik Sinner | 2024 US Open |
The match saw Sinner start strong, gaining a double-break advantage early in the first three sets. Medvedev, after making 15 unforced errors in the first set, refined his baseline game to claim the second set, winning five consecutive games. However, Sinner quickly regained control, winning the first five games of the third set and putting himself one set away from victory.
In the fourth set, Sinner crucially saved two break points at 2-3, including one with a powerful serve-and-volley combination. Medvedev missed a crucial backhand volley on his second break chance during that game. Sinner then broke Medvedev in the next game and later converted his second match point on his serve.
Building on his quarter-final run in New York last year, Sinner demonstrated impressive speed and net play, winning 28 of his 33 net points. “We worked hard on this aspect of the game. I know I can improve a lot, especially at the net," Sinner said. "I tried to mix in serve-and-volley a couple of times. I’m very happy with how I did today and I'm looking forward to my next opponent.”
Now ranked World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Sinner improved his record against Medvedev to 6-7 after trailing 0-6 in their early matchups. He has since won five consecutive matches against Medvedev, including a memorable comeback in the Australian Open final this year. Medvedev had previously defeated Sinner in a five-set quarter-final at Wimbledon just two months prior.
As the last major champion remaining in the draw, Sinner will face 25th seed Jack Draper in the semi-finals. Draper won their only previous meeting in 2021 at the ATP 500 at The Queen’s Club, marking his first tour-level victory. At that time, Sinner was ranked World No. 23, while Draper was No. 309. Now, they are set to compete on one of tennis’s biggest stages.
With a season record of 53-5, Sinner becomes the third Italian man to reach the Flushing Meadows semi-finals in the Open Era, joining Corrado Barazzutti (1977) and Matteo Berrettini (2019). He is currently on a nine-match winning streak, having entered the final major of the year following his triumph in Cincinnati.
