EAST LANSING – The Ohio State Buckeyes continued their dominance over Michigan State, extending their winning streak in the rivalry to nine games with a decisive 38-7 victory on Saturday night.
Despite showing some fight, the Spartans (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) couldn't recover from early mistakes, including two red zone fumbles and a missed interception in the end zone. Ohio State (4-0, 1-0) scored 28 unanswered points to pull away by halftime.
Michigan State's quarterback Aidan Chiles started strong, completing nine of his first ten passes, but turnovers proved detrimental. He ended the game with 167 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, alongside a fumble before leaving the field early in the fourth quarter.
The Spartans’ rushing attack struggled again, with Nathan Carter and Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams managing just 62 yards on 15 carries. Receiver Jaron Glover returned from injury, catching four passes for 53 yards and a touchdown.
For Ohio State, quarterback Will Howard threw for 244 yards, connecting on two touchdowns despite one interception. Emeka Egbuka led the receiving corps with seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, while standout freshman Jeremiah Smith shined with five receptions for 83 yards, a touchdown, and a 19-yard rushing score.
The first half was competitive, but the second half turned one-sided as Ohio State controlled the game. The Buckeyes received the opening kickoff and marched down the field, with Howard completing his first seven passes. A personal foul penalty stalled their drive, forcing a 30-yard field goal by Jayden Fielding and ending Ohio State's streak of touchdown drives on their opening possessions against the Spartans.
Michigan State's initial drive was promising but stalled after a failed fourth-and-1 attempt. Ohio State responded with a 14-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Howard to Gee Scott, putting the Buckeyes ahead 10-0 early in the second quarter.
The Spartans had another opportunity when tight end Jack Velling fumbled in the red zone after a 26-yard gain. After an interception by linebacker Jordan Turner, Chiles connected with Glover for a touchdown, narrowing the score to 10-7.
However, Ohio State quickly regained control. Jeremiah Smith's 19-yard touchdown run increased their lead to 17-7. Chiles then fumbled while driving into the red zone after what appeared to be a missed facemask call. The boos from the crowd echoed as officials reversed a fumble by TreVeyon Henderson. Though Michigan State managed to stop the Buckeyes on that drive, they were unable to capitalize, leading to their first punt.
In the two-minute drill, Smith dazzled with two spectacular one-handed catches, the second resulting in a 17-yard touchdown reception from backup Devin Brown after Howard left the game due to injury. This pushed Ohio State’s lead to 24-7 just before halftime.
Howard returned in the third quarter and, on a critical fourth-and-5 play, connected with Egbuka for a 33-yard touchdown. Following another interception by Chiles, Howard scored again on a 6-yard run, further discouraging the green-and-white crowd as many began to exit.
