Fred Warner's pick-six propels the 49ers to a 30-13 victory over the Patriots, ending their two-game losing streak.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Despite the recent successes of the San Francisco 49ers, a two-game losing streak and a series of injuries early in the season can shake any team's confidence.
At least for one day, those concerns were set aside.
Brock Purdy connected for a touchdown pass, Fred Warner returned an interception for a score, and the 49ers rebounded with a 30-13 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday.
“We needed it,” left tackle Trent Williams remarked. “It was about more than just improving to 2-2; it was crucial for our confidence.”
The 49ers' confidence took a hit after consecutive road losses to Minnesota and the Los Angeles Rams, compounded by injuries to several key players. However, they quickly found their rhythm at home against the struggling Patriots (1-3). The defense recorded six sacks and a touchdown in their first game without Javon Hargrave, who faces a potentially season-ending injury. Purdy completed three deep passes, and Jordan Mason rushed for 123 yards, marking his third 100-yard game in four weeks.
“It feels good to get a win,” defensive end Nick Bosa said. “It’s a long season. From the outside, it might look like the building’s burning down, but I told the d-line last night that we’ve lost some guys, but I still believe in this group.”
San Francisco opened the game with field goals from Jake Moody on their first two drives before Warner made a highlight play, intercepting Jacoby Brissett and returning it 45 yards for his second career touchdown. Warner now has three forced fumbles and two interceptions through four games this season.
This was the Patriots' first interception of the year, reflecting their struggles to establish a consistent passing game with Brissett at quarterback, raising questions about when rookie Drake Maye might step in.
Brissett completed 19 of 32 passes for 168 yards and was sacked six times for a loss of 25 yards. New England has been held to under 150 passing yards in each of their first four games this season, a first since 1971.
“At this point, Jacoby is our starting quarterback,” coach Jerod Mayo stated. “I haven’t reviewed the film yet. He’s been a great leader. We’ll assess everything during our long flight back while watching the film.”
Purdy finished the day throwing for 288 yards, including a touchdown pass to George Kittle.
After getting inside the 10-yard line on their first two drives but settling for field goals, the 49ers seemed poised for another field goal late in the second quarter when penalties negated two potential touchdowns. However, Purdy lofted a pass into the end zone that Kittle leaped to snag amidst three defenders, securing his second touchdown of the season and extending the lead to 20-0.
“I saw him break out. I was getting hit, so I thought, ‘I have to give my guy a chance,’” Purdy explained. “I put it up there for him. He made a fantastic play, much better than the throw itself.”
San Francisco allowed a 63-yard field goal by Joey Slye on the final play of the first half, and rookie Isaac Guerendo lost a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half, marking another special teams miscue for the 49ers. This set up Brissett's 5-yard touchdown pass to Austin Hooper, narrowing the gap to 20-10.
Purdy quickly responded with a 53-yard pass on the next drive, leading to Mason’s 4-yard touchdown run, restoring San Francisco's control with a 27-10 advantage.
