Brazil suffers a disappointing 1-0 loss to Paraguay.
Sept 11 (Reuters) - Brazil suffered their fourth defeat in five World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday, losing 1-0 to Paraguay in Asuncion after Diego Gomez scored in the first half. The five-time world champions managed only a narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador at home last Friday and currently sit fifth in the South American qualifying standings for the 2026 World Cup, with 10 points, just ahead of Venezuela on goal difference.
The top six teams qualify directly for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, while the seventh place will enter further qualifying rounds.
Manager Dorival Jr., who succeeded Tite after Brazil's quarter-final exit at the 2022 World Cup, appeared dejected on the sidelines as his team was outclassed, lucky not to suffer a heavier defeat. Brazil failed to register a shot on target in the first half and fell behind in the 20th minute when Gomez struck from the edge of the box, with the ball hitting the post before finding the net past goalkeeper Alisson.
"The coach is still figuring out the best way for us to play, which is reflected in the results," defender Marquinhos told Brazilian TV Globo. "We have many new players and are lacking confidence. Qualifying is tough, and we need to manage this challenging period. It's a time of transition, and we're not feeling confident. We will work hard; getting results on the pitch is the best response."
Brazil only managed three shots on target during the match, all from a frustrated Vinicius Jr., who has struggled to replicate his club form for Real Madrid at the international level.
Next month, Brazil will aim to revive their campaign with an away match against Chile, followed by a home game against Peru.
