Trump refers to his supporters as 'basement dwellers', according to his former press secretary.
Stephanie Grisham, former press secretary to Donald Trump, sharply criticized the Republican presidential nominee during the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, declaring, “He has no empathy, no morals, and no fidelity to the truth.”
Grisham, who previously served as a spokesperson for Melania Trump, shared personal insights into Trump's behavior behind the scenes. “I wasn’t just a Trump supporter; I was a true believer and one of his closest advisers. The Trump family became my family,” she recounted, noting that she spent holidays at Mar-a-Lago. “When the cameras were off, I saw a different side of him… Trump mocks his supporters, referring to them as 'basement dwellers.' During a hospital visit, when people were dying in the ICU, he was upset that the cameras weren't focused on him.”
She further recalled, “He used to say to me: ‘It doesn’t matter what you say, Stephanie; say it enough and people will believe you.’” Grisham recounted an instance during the January 6 insurrection when she asked Melania Trump if she could tweet a condemnation of the violence. The first lady’s response was a simple, “No.”
Grisham received applause when she mentioned that she was the first senior staff member to resign that day. She concluded her speech by endorsing Kamala Harris, stating, “I love my country more than my party. Kamala Harris tells the truth, respects the American people, and has my vote.”
The convention has been highlighting Republican voters who oppose Trump and support the Democratic ticket. Kyle Sweetser, an Alabama voter, also spoke, sharing that after voting for Trump three times, he felt disillusioned when his policies negatively impacted blue-collar workers. “I realized Trump wasn’t for me. He was for lining his own pockets,” he said. Sweetser added, “I’m not left-wing, but I believe our leaders should bring out the best in us, not the worst. I’m voting for Kamala Harris because she’ll make us proud to be American again.”
Other Republicans scheduled to speak include Olivia Troye, who worked for Mike Pence; Adam Kinzinger, a former representative; Mesa, Arizona, Mayor John Giles; and former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan.
Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, also appeared at the convention. Despite a fallout with Trump and testifying against him in a hush-money trial, Cohen expressed interest in speaking if given the opportunity.
The convention has emphasized key messages, including the importance of accountability and the need for leadership that inspires unity rather than division.
