At 22, Gibbs is coming off a standout rookie season where he rushed for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, with an additional 316 receiving yards and a touchdown. He was a finalist for AP Offensive Rookie of the Year and played a key role in the Lions' NFC Championship Game run.
Gibbs has set a goal to become just the fourth player in NFL history to achieve 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, joining Christian McCaffrey, Marshall Faulk, and Roger Craig. "A lot of great receiving backs have done that," Gibbs said. "Christian McCaffrey's done that. Alvin Kamara has been close. Marshall Faulk has done it. I'd like to be in that category."
Detroit’s rookie cornerbacks also faced setbacks, with Terrion Arnold leaving practice early due to an upper body injury and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. being evaluated for an ankle injury.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Multiple teams have expressed interest in acquiring pass rusher Matthew Judon from the New England Patriots amid his ongoing contract dispute, ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler reports. Judon is in the final year of his contract with a base salary of $6.5 million. Despite receiving a contract offer from the Patriots this summer, he did not accept it.
Judon had previously mentioned on a podcast that he submitted his own contract proposal to the Patriots and was awaiting a response, though he also indicated he might play under his current contract if necessary, believing it did not reflect his value. Tensions escalated on July 29 when Judon attended the first full-pads practice without his gear, leading to an animated discussion with coach Jerod Mayo before he left the field. He later returned to talk with executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf and director of player personnel Matt Groh.
Judon later clarified that he wasn’t prepared to practice that day and left to avoid being a distraction. He returned to address concerns with Wolf and rejoined practice shortly after. While he was absent the following day, his return to practice since then has been positive. During the preseason opener, Judon was seen on the sidelines assisting coach Mayo in mentoring outside linebacker Oshane Ximines.
"He's been dialed in, excited for the players, and he was coaching them up. No complaints from me," Mayo said, addressing the situation. "It's one day. I think we all have a bad day every once in a while."
Defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington noted that Judon's contract situation hasn’t affected his performance. "He's been the same for us," Covington said. "He’s been great in the classroom and on the practice field. We all have bad days; unfortunately, his was on camera. Other than that, he's been who he’s been since we signed him."
Outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins, who has previously coached Judon with the Baltimore Ravens, echoed similar sentiments. "Great players compartmentalize the business part of the game with the football part," Wilkins said. "He loves football and his teammates. When it’s time to work, he’s working."
