Mayweather Triumphs Over Gotti Once More in Exhibition Boxing Rematch in Mexico City
Former world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather once again outclassed John Gotti III, the grandson of the late New York crime boss, in a lackluster exhibition fight rematch in Mexico City.
On Saturday, Mayweather, 47, dominated the bout from start to finish, despite some confusion when the round-ending bell failed to sound, and the referee abruptly left the ring mid-fight. The eight-round match featured two-minute rounds with two-minute rest periods.
Gotti's lack of effort drew the ire of the 22,000-strong crowd. Mayweather began the fight aggressively, targeting Gotti's head, while Gotti focused on minimizing damage.
Confusion arose in the first round when the bell did not ring after two minutes, leading to complaints from Gotti’s corner. In the second round, after Mayweather landed an illegal punch, Panamanian referee Hector Afu exited the ring in apparent frustration, with Mexican referee Alfredo Uruzquieta stepping in.
Gotti finally threw some significant punches to Mayweather's body in the fourth round, but they had little impact. Throughout the sixth and seventh rounds, Mayweather unleashed a flurry of blows on Gotti, who struggled to defend himself, further frustrating the audience.
In the final round, Mayweather cornered Gotti, but his opponent managed to hold on until the end. Since it was an exhibition match, no official winner was declared.
This rematch followed a chaotic exhibition in June 2023 in South Florida that was halted after a brawl broke out between the fighters’ camps.
Mayweather retired in 2017 with an unbeaten record of 50-0 but continues to participate in non-scoring fights. Gotti, 31, who previously had a 5-1 record in mixed martial arts before transitioning to boxing, is the grandson of John Gotti, the former head of the Gambino crime family, who died in prison in 2002.
