Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese continue to make history in the WNBA.
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, both stars of college basketball, are continuing their historic runs in the WNBA.
On Sunday, Clark led the Indiana Fever to a 92-75 victory over the Seattle Storm and set a new league record. She scored 23 points and recorded her 225th assist, surpassing Ticha Penicheiro’s record for the most assists by a rookie in WNBA history, set in 1998.
“I’m incredibly grateful to pass someone like her,” Clark, who leads the league with 8.3 assists per game, said after the game. “She’s such a legend in our sport. It’s amazing, and I hope there are many more records to come.”
The milestone occurred in the second quarter and was celebrated by Penicheiro in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Records are meant to be broken…they signify growth and progress. I can’t think of a better player to do it,” Penicheiro wrote. The Fever also shared a video of Penicheiro congratulating Clark, who finished the game with nine assists and has 232 for the season.
Clark’s record is just one of many achievements in her first WNBA season. She has already made history as the first rookie to record a triple-double and recently set a milestone with 19 assists in a single game.
Meanwhile, Reese also made headlines on Sunday, recording 19 points and 20 rebounds in the Chicago Sky’s 86-68 loss to the Phoenix Mercury. She became the fastest player in WNBA history to achieve 20 double-doubles in a single season, reaching the milestone in just 27 games. Reese, who leads the league in rebounding with 12.3 per game, is now only two double-doubles away from matching Tina Charles’ rookie record for most double-doubles in a season, set in 2010. Earlier this season, Reese set the record for most consecutive double-doubles.
With the WNBA resuming play after the Olympic break, Clark’s Fever (13-15) will face the Minnesota Lynx, while Reese’s Sky (11-16) will play the Connecticut Sun. As these star rookies continue to shine, more records are likely to fall this season.
