Brock Purdy had a mixed performance in the 49ers' preseason tie against the Raiders, which ended 24-24.
LAS VEGAS — Brock Purdy demonstrated efficiency by completing 9 of 12 passes for 96 yards, but he also threw a red-zone interception, which led to a tense moment for his coach when he made a touchdown-saving tackle.
“When it happened, I was hoping he wouldn't tackle him,” said San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan after the game ended in a 24-24 preseason tie with the Las Vegas Raiders. “It's preseason, so let him score. But I'm glad he tackled him and stayed healthy.”
Daniel Carlson's 43-yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining tied the game for the Raiders (0-2-1) against the 49ers (1-1-1). A 10-yard touchdown pass from Joshua Dobbs to Jacob Cowing late in the third quarter had previously given the 49ers a 24-21 lead.
With the regular season just two weeks away, the two teams took different approaches to the game. The 49ers showcased most of their starters in the first quarter, while the Raiders fielded backups vying for roster spots.
Teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday. Raiders coach Antonio Pierce mentioned he would consult with general manager Tom Telesco about potential cuts. “It’s not easy cutting 37 men and telling them they have to find somewhere else to play,” Pierce said.
Quarterback Nathan Peterman, unexpectedly starting after Pierce had announced Carter Bradley would open the game, played the first half and went 12 of 19 for 108 yards and a touchdown. Bradley led the drive that resulted in the tying field goal, finishing with 9 of 21 passes for 169 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in the end zone.
Tyreik McAllister, another Raiders player fighting for a roster spot, returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown and caught a 35-yard TD pass.
On the other side, the 49ers were eager to assess most of their starters, including the preseason debuts of wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle. Kittle made a standout 19-yard catch between two defenders and concluded the game with three receptions for 34 yards, surpassing his previous preseason total of four catches for 47 yards.
Not all 49ers starters participated, however, marking the team’s first appearance at Allegiant Stadium since losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl six months prior.
“I actually really like the stadium,” Shanahan said. “It has a cool atmosphere and feels like a true football stadium inside. I enjoy playing here, although it wasn’t the best feeling going into the locker room, remembering the last time we were here, but you move past it quickly.”
Among those absent was All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, sidelined due to a calf injury. All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams and second-team All-Pro receiver Brandon Aiyuk are currently engaged in unresolved contract disputes. However, Aiyuk was present at Allegiant Stadium on Friday night and spoke with Pierce before the game. Pierce was Aiyuk’s linebackers coach at Arizona State during 2018-19.
Aiyuk did not travel with the team for their game in Nashville two weeks prior and watched last week’s home game against New Orleans from a private box.
Purdy played into the second quarter against the Raiders' reserves, initially taking a 10-0 lead and almost extending it further.
“It felt good to get out there with the guys and move the ball,” Purdy said. “We were all in rhythm.”
The game began with a 49-yard field goal by Jake Moody, followed by Purdy leading the 49ers on a 12-play, 85-yard touchdown drive. San Francisco was on the Raiders' 16-yard line early in the second period when Purdy's pass to Samuel was broken up by cornerback Sam Webb and intercepted by safety Chris Smith II.
That's when Purdy made his third career tackle across preseason, regular season, and playoffs. “I was trying to get him out of bounds and set our defense up for good field position,” Purdy explained. “I felt like I had leverage to do it. Obviously, I don’t want to be tackling in the preseason, but it happened so fast.”
The remainder of the game saw reserves from both teams take the field.
Injuries: 49ers: Left defensive ends Yetur Gross-Matos and Leonard Floyd left the game with sprained knees late in the first quarter and entered the blue injury tent. Shanahan stated both would undergo MRIs on Saturday.
Up Next: 49ers: Host the New York Jets on September 9 to open the season. Raiders: Visit the Los Angeles Chargers on September 8 for their season opener.
